Acrylic and Cushioned Acrylic Tennis Courts
There are many brand names but the majority of these surfaces are the same. Neill and his team probably have worked with more of these products than any installer in Europe and has a good relationship with many manufacturers, allowing him to get the best prices.
Cushioned Acrylics are built up in layers. In layman’s terms, the process is as follows:
- A non porous court of a macadam type (It can be concrete, and even wood) is initially built.
- Upon this, several layers of resurfacer are squeegeed on to create a smooth and even surface.
- Several layers of cushion coat are then squeegeed on to build in the degree of cushioning required. Alternatively, a rubber underlay can be installed
- Depending on the manufacturer, 2 or 3 colour coats are added.
- Finally, the white tennis playing lines are painted on.
Non Cushioned Acrylic courts are what they say they are - they don’t have the intermediate cushion coats or underlay.
These type of courts are not pervious to water, sometimes referred to as non porous. If built outdoors, they should be built with a more noticeable fall than on other surfaces. They are, though, high performance courts used for major championships.
